When you look for somewhere to stay in Ravenna, the real question is rarely “centre or outside”. It is: from there, how long does it actually take to get where I want to go – the beach, the mosaics, the theme park, the train station?
I made a deliberate choice: Pixel B&B sits in the Ravenna countryside, at Via Sinistra Canale Molinetto 181, outside the old town. It is not second best – it is the reason guests come back. And because it can look far away on a map, this page gives you the real minutes, one by one, without rounding them in my favour.
Near Ravenna, not in the old town
In high season the centre of Ravenna is busy: traffic, the hunt for a parking space, heat bouncing off the stone – and the ZTL, the restricted traffic zone where driving without a permit is limited or fined. Out here it is another world: you wake up to green all around, take your time over breakfast, and head into the city whenever you like.
The location works in two directions at once. On one side, Ravenna and its mosaics; on the other, the Adriatic coast. If you want to combine a beach day with a cultural visit, you can do it without moving your luggage.
Near the sea: Punta Marina in 6 minutes, Marina di Ravenna in 11
These are the two closest beaches, both a short drive away: Punta Marina in about six minutes, Marina di Ravenna in about eleven. It means you can spend the morning on the sand and the afternoon in a basilica, or the other way round, without the day turning into a commute.
Many of our international guests head instead for Lido di Dante, fifteen minutes away by car: it is the wildest of the three, with fewer beach clubs and more dunes.
You can also get there without a car: the house sits directly on the cycle path to the coast, and the bus leaves from the stop right outside.
Near Mirabilandia: about 20 minutes, and quiet evenings
If you are travelling with children, the theme park is often the reason for the trip. Mirabilandia is about twenty minutes away by car, a little more on busy days. The difference from sleeping next door to it is the evening: here you come back to the countryside, you hear the silence, and you start the next day rested.
Near the station: the bus stops fifty metres away
If you arrive by train you do not need to rent anything. Ravenna station is well connected, and the bus stop that brings you here is fifty metres from the house. The journey takes about twelve minutes, on lines 70 and 80, in the Punta Marina direction. Coming in, you get off at the stop on the far side and cross the road; going back to Ravenna, you use the one on the pavement side.
The same bus runs the other way to the city centre and the beach. If you do not drive, or would rather not drive on holiday, this is the simplest way to get around – and the gentlest on the environment.
Near the UNESCO mosaics: a quarter of an hour
The Basilica of San Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia – the mosaics Ravenna is famous for – are about fifteen minutes away by car. Close enough to visit at leisure, far enough to come back to somewhere peaceful in the evening.
And there is something here you will not find elsewhere: steps from the rooms is my mosaic studio, where I work and teach. After seeing the mosaics in the basilicas, you can see how they are made.
Arriving by car: free parking, no ZTL
There are two free parking spaces in front of the gate. Ours is a dead-end street: only residents drive and park along it, so there is no circling for a space and none of the worry of the city’s restricted traffic zone. From the A14 motorway we are about thirty minutes away; I send precise directions when you book.
The nearest airports are Forlì (about 40 minutes), Rimini (about an hour) and Bologna (about an hour and a quarter). For guests arriving from abroad or from the cruise port, I can arrange a transfer.
If you would rather cycle
The house is right on the cycle path that leads to the beach, the historic centre and the nature reserves around us. Bicycles are available to guests free of charge, and if you bring your own there is a secure garage for it overnight. It is what I recommend to anyone staying more than a couple of days.
